Table Manners
“Good breeding consists in concealing
how much we think of ourselves and
how little we think of the other person”
— Mark Twain
Aunt Martha was getting old.
“Oh, my bones,” she would groan.
“And my eyes—can’t see anymore!”
One evening at dinner
she noticed me picking at my food.
“What’s wrong?” she asked with concern.
“I thought you liked dandelions.”
I just swallowed
the gritty snail
her fingers missed
and held my tongue.
