Walnut

These karumi, these brain drupes —
eat for life, just watch a fuzzy
old one — aflatoxins aplenty.

Husks can be ink, shells can be art
and in the hemispheres, oil.
Taste the residue of plant poison;

this tree must be top dog, must
muscle out the rooted competition,
annihilate the green, offer a stone —

Fruit, just for you, a hard, wrinkled head.
