Cat
You wore the rain in your eyes,
hazy and hazel. I saw how they
adopted a violent need from me.
I saw how I could live with you,
start a family with you,
shave you cleanly
from my own loneliness.
You said I love you out of nowhere
and I replied in Spanish, like a Neruda
who knew your body under your
green, wet corduroy jacket.
You were resting on your knees
in the park when I bent down
to kiss you. You were more
impressed than surprised.
Did you know I had never done that before?
You did know you were my type.
I thought when we started we had
everything we would ever need.
I hear you’ve covered-up
the puma with
peonies.
I was crazy
for that cat’s
unfinished lines.
